Dear Parents/Guardians,

I hope you are enjoying your summer break. It has gone by very fast! I also hope that you and your children have had some time to relax and have some summer fun. It won’t be long before the start of the 2016-2017 school year at Akros. We are really looking forward to the new school year.

Here are some very important dates:

  • Open House on Monday, August 15 th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. with the parent meeting beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the Akros Cafeteria. We will be sharing our successes and discussing the upcoming school year. There are lots of exciting things to see! Your child will also be able to receive their schedule, meet their teachers, visit their classrooms, get into their lockers and check the bus schedules in the office.
  • The first day of school is Wednesday, August 17th, 2016. If your child does not come to school within first 3 days of school, their spot will be forfeited and given to the next child on the waiting list.

There are just a few changes to the dress code which can be reviewed here for boys and here for girls. Please read the dress code completely. Please make sure to purchase school clothes for your children that meet the guidelines in the Akros Dress Code. Students are expected to be in complete dress code on the first day of school and every day throughout the school year. Also the 2016-2017 school calendar can be found here and student supply list. If you have any questions, feel free to call Mrs. Keen, Mrs. Piskula, or Mrs. DeCesare at (330)374-6704.

Please remember that all bussing must be approved by Akron Public prior to going to Petermann for routing. This can take up to ten business days from the time we send in the proper documents. If you have any changes, the proper documentation needs to get to Mrs. Keen immediately. Any other bussing questions should be directed to Petermann at (330) 773-4222.

We look forward to seeing you at Open House!

As everyone knows, we love nothing more at Akros Middle School than when former students take time out of their busy schedules to come and visit us!  Talk about a surprise, these two ladies stopped in on Thursday afternoon and it was awesome!  Please take a moment to read up on their successes.  These are two leaders and students that we are so excited to see go into the future and become amazing women....oh wait...they already are!

I went to Akros Middle School and The Edge Academy since Kindergarten.  I am now a Junior at Akron Early College High School and I'm going to be graduating with my High School Diploma as well as my Associates Degree in Science.  The faculty at both of these schooles are one of the main reasons I have made it this far in this program.  The teachers taught me how to work hard to get what I want and that has definitely carried over with me.  The transition to my Freshman year was difficult, but I was ahead of most of the students that came from Akron Public schools.  I am truly appreciateive of all of the hardwork each teacher put in me.  I plan to go to college for Pre-Med and I know that I can do it because I was taught from a very young age that anything is possible.  Thank you so very much!!

I attended The Edge Academy since the 4th grade.  Once I got here, I knew that this was the school for me.  My mother loved the school so much, she decided to tell all of her family, so now, I have siblings and cousins who go here.  After I left the Edge, I went to Akros for 3 of the best years of my life.  The students and staff were all great people.  This school prepared me for some of the hardest times of my life.  I am now a junior, soon to be senior at Akron Early College High School.  At my school, I am earning a college degree while getting my high school diploma.  It is as hard as it sounds, but my prior education at The Edge and Akros really prepared me for the courses I am now taking.  I wouldn't have wanted to go anywhere else for school, which is why I encourage my siblings and family members to attend here as well.  Thank you to all of the faculty members at both The Edge and Akros, you have helped me a tremendous amount!

As most of you know, there is nothing that we like better as a staff then when former students return to visit us and this morning was no exception!  Now a Junior who splits her time between Kenmore and Buchtel High Schools, Kimiera Grant is a girl on a mission!  She is part of the vocational nursing program, maintaining a 4.0 GPA and participating in a WIDE variety of extracurricular programs.  Kimiera plays volleyball, runs track & field events, along with being a member of DECA and she LOVES her art program in school (even winning a 2nd place with one of her projects!)

We are so proud of her and all of her hard work!  If you are a former student, please feel free to stop by and tell us how you're doing!  At least keep us updated on our Facebook page!

The 2015-2016 school year will begin Wednesday, August 19th. We are excited to see the returning students and meet new students coming to Akros Middle School this year. Akros Middle School will be holding the Open House for the 2015-2016 school year on Monday, August 17th from 4-6 p.m. with the parent meeting beginning at 5:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in the cafeteria with very important information being shared as we begin this school year. Please bring your child/children so they can also meet their teachers, follow their schedule and practice their locker combinations. We look forward to seeing you at the Open House.

On a recent beautiful fall morning, we had two former students stop in to visit us!  We have to admit, we LOVE THIS!!  These two young men

are now Juniors at local High Schools and frankly, we couldn’t be more proud.  In fact, they stayed with us for the morning and ended up talking to some of our current Akros Middle School students regarding their experiences and opportunities that they have had.  Along with academic achievements, both of these young men are on a great and bright path into their futures.

Carlos admits that when he came to Akros in 7th grade that “I got into trouble in my younger years.  I was risking my life and freedom by having to face being locked up.  Being here at Akros, I got the attention I needed to further my education and want to pursue the right path.”  Carlos is a very active student at Firestone High school, including participating in programs such as Falcon Friends, Upward Bound Classic, Alchemy Inc. and College Today for Kent State.  He also maintains a 3.0-3.5 GPA and knows that his limitless with potential.

Tyrique has also had a fun-filled and busy career in high school!  He has spent a lot of time working on his passion, which is music.  Which includes singing, and songwriting, he has even been invited to sing with some local record labels!  He has been on Merit Roll multiple times throughout his high school career and is currently enrolled in a vocational program working with Kenmore Construction.

Both of these young men and glowing representatives of the leaders we want to see in our community.  We are so glad that they came back to visit us and look forward to hearing more of their successes in the future!

Students in Life Skills visited Stan Hywet Hall recently!  They learned about the mansion which is celebrating it's 100th anniversary this year.  They found out about the differences between today's technology and the things that were used in 1915.  They also learned that you'd need about 12 million dollars to buy such a house today!
